StarHub Near-Field Communication Trial Testimonial

First and foremost, I would like to express my appreciation for StarHub and SPH’s Hardwarezone for providing me with a great opportunity to participate in this NFC trial. NFC had been touted to spur secured contactless payment in the future. Since 2012, the amount of merchants and retailers has been growing extensively islandwide.

Setting up the NFC application; StarHub’s SmartWallet on Android handset was such a breeze with simple illustrations carefully designed to ensure users understand the setting up process. The application allows users to set up three different types of virtual cards which include DBS One.Tap CreditCard, EZ-Link card and FEVO Prepaid MasterCard inside the SmartWallet.

This ensures users can select different types of cards according to their spending usage; from prepaid to credit. SmartWallet’s secured encryptions safeguard users from the security threats posed on the virtual platforms, therefore users can enjoy a peace of mind while enjoying the conveniences of this service.

Initially, I wanted to test NFC EZ-Link over at a supermarket for my weekly grocery shopping but SmartWallet turns out to be my life saver. Due to my personal negligent, I misplaced mywallet while I was on my way to school. Feeling famished but without a single cent on me, I suddenly recalled that I still possess a virtual wallet on my Android handset. I decided to grab my favourite breakfast meal at Burger King which accepts EZ-Link payment mode.

After placing my order,I informed the cashier that I will be paying via EZ-Link. The cashier advised me to flash my “EZ-Link” card at the reader; he was amused when I flash a mobile device at the reader instead of a physical card. Other patrons gave an astonishing expression when I completed the transaction using a mobile device. One of them even asked me if I had hidden a physical EZ-Link card underneaththe back cover of my handset. I further explained that this contactless payment has been made possible by NFC technology alongside with SmartWallet application.

My first NFC experience was truly positive and memorable, as I did not expect a smartphone application can turn out to be life saver. I was so glad that I possess a SmartWallet in my pocket which I would proudly proclaim it as a friend in need is a friend indeed.
