KUALA LUMPUR: Police believed they have crippled a gang of robbers masquerading as taxi drivers with the arrest of four people.
They are also hot on the trail of two more members of the gang which had been active in the city for the past six months.
The four suspects who were arrested recently were a man and three women aged between 26 and 39.
City CID chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Ku Chin Wah said the gang was believed to have been responsible for at least 13 robbery cases in the city.
Their victims were mostly women, including two tourists.
The men drove the taxi while the women helped them rob the victims of their cash and valuables.
We are also on the trail of another gang with a similar modus operandi, he told a press conference yesterday.
The gang would normally target a lone passenger, mostly women, he said.
Once the victims are in the car, the driver will give excuses to go on a different route, such as he needed to go to a petrol station or to pick up another passenger.
Other times they claimed the taxi broke down in order to stop and let their accomplices board the car and rob the victims, he said.
Besides robbing the victims of valuables and cash, some of them were also forced to withdraw money from the ATM or call their friends to transfer money into their bank account.
The gang is believed to have robbed victims of RM47,000.
Police are looking for two men, S. Prakash Kumar, 39, and A. Joseph Aaron, 26, to assist in their investigations.
Meanwhile, he said police also received two reports regarding taxi drivers who had beaten up passengers.
He advised passengers to exercise caution and to call the police immediately if they see taxi drivers acting suspiciously.
