Getting a job as a male actor in Japans adult movie industry is hard, in more ways than one. However, its not impossible, as Clubs of Asia writer Satoshi Watanabe found out during a visit to a leading JAV studio. Watanabe spoke to Yuko Hayashida, a veteran recruiter in the Japanese AV industry to get his tips on how to land a male acting role.
Thanks for your time, Mr Hayashida. Its a topic that many of our readers are interested, and we hope youll be able to explain to them: how can they get a job as a male actor in the JAV industry?
Its a question that I do get asked quite a lot, and most of the time people are not very serious about it. They think acting in JAV movies is funny and a joke, but its actually quite a serious job and a very profitable business. Each year my studio makes hundreds of titles, and the industry as a whole produces thousands of films. So its actually quite an important position and one that people should take seriously if they want to apply.
There are three key things that we look for in recruiting male actors. Firstly, our preference is always going to be Japanese males. The problem is though, its such an unpopular profession in Japan that there are now less than 70 Japanese men left in the industry, but we have hundreds of new female stars that want to start working each week.
We estimate there are over 10,000 female AV actresses in Japan, and that number is always growing. So, even though most studios will only consider hiring Japanese men to act in JAV movies, some studios are starting to look at men from other countries.
What countries are these studios recruiting male actors from?
We are actually seeing two very different groups of foreign males being recruited into the JAV industry. Firstly, the main group is men from other parts of east Asia: Korea and Taiwan are the major sources of male talent, but there has also been a trend in recent months of some studios looking further abroad, and into south Asia.
Often these men have some Japanese language skills that they may have learnt at school or from taking lessons, because the audience who consume JAV want to be able to understand what the actors are saying its also important that the actors can communicate with the director and the actress!
Theres also a very different type of male actor being recruited for JAV films, and that is African males. Particularly African American males are in high demand, but also men from Africa itself. A number of studios specialize in only filming JAV titles with black actors and theyve been able to carve out quite a profitable niche in the market. These actors seldom can speak Japanese, but for some reason that tends to appeal to the audience.
Do you think men from other countries in Asia, or even from Europe or other areas, have a chance of being recruited?
Right now, I would say its not very likely. But, things are starting to change. There have been some studios that have released titles with Caucasian males and actors from places like India or Arab nations, and they have been successful but theres just not a big market yet for actors from these regions.
That said, if there are men in these countries that want to get a job as a JAV actor, their dream can come true, but they need to work harder than other men. They need to really study Japanese until they are fluent, and they need to also work on their self control and recovery time. Certainly if we had a foreign male apply with these skills and a good command of Japanese I think we would offer him a screen test to see if he had potential.

Yes that sounds good to me. We have trouble in our recruitment of foreign males because they often spam our email address with hundreds of messages and its often not in English or other foreign languages. To make our life easier, if men could write a brief description of themselves in Japanese and post it on your Facebook page, we could then review them at our leisure and make offers to anyone we think should come in for a screen test.
