Ipad 2 sound not working

Hi all,

Yesterday I found my Ipad 2 is not producing sound anymore in apps.

did a sound adjustment in settings and I can hear the sound, but still no sound in apps.

if I plug in the ear piece, the sound is available.

the side lock is set to lock screen rotation.

when using the double click home button , swipe taskbar right to get the volume screen, the volume bar has no adjustment slides that can be made.

I believe the IPAD is in constant earpiece mode, hence no sound can be heard.:(

any idea how to rectify this?
