need help/suggestions for recovering HDD after chkdsk

hi guys, my WD 2tb black has been reading rather slowly recently. theres a significant lag time when opening folders. so i thought i'd check it for errors in windows. i let the scan run with no hiccup, ending with the prompt "some problems were found and fixed. Any files that were affected by the problems were moved to a folder named “Found” on the device or disk."
however to my horror, i could no longer read the disk, let alone accessing it. windows asked me to format it in order to use it. i know its my stupidity of not backing up my files before performing the scan, but now that has passed, i really need help to get my files back. i was rushing for a school project and the lag really hindered me - i thought i could just "clean it up" by performing the scan. since there wasnt any signs of physical problems prior to this, i believe its solely a software issue. if theres anyone that might have encountered this before or might know what i can do to recover my stuff please do suggest. any help is appreciated, thanks!!
