FROM WILLIAM MOK CHAN MUN -22 MAY I refer to the discussions on the roles of Residents Committee (RC) leadership in TODAY (I agree: Success of RCs lies in the leaders, May 17) on how residents and volunteers can make a difference to the community. I, too, would like to share my humble experience serving in an RC. I have been a RC Chairman for more than six years. To me, the time spent doing community work has been most meaningful and rewarding. The personal satisfaction of seeing neighbours who previously had disputes or a misunderstanding coming together after our RCs mediation is most rewarding. Also gratifying is the appreciation from lower-income families who receive financial assistance through our RC recommendations to the Community Development and Welfare Fund or the Community Development Council, and when their children eventually show progress in their studies. Smiles, joy and happiness are observed when residents meet at our RCs events or interest groups, and become good friends after our RC block parties, excursions and other activities. During RC meetings, my fellow members are serious in discussing programmes to be organised for residents, as well as sharing their inputs in estate improvements, safety and security issues, government policies and national issues. Furthermore, suggestions and feedback on government policies and national issues are regularly channelled to the relevant government agencies for consideration. My fellow RC members are passionate and committed in wanting to improve the living environment in the neighbourhood and serving the residents well. These are fond memories and satisfaction I get from volunteering as an RC Chairman which I will hold for many years to come.
