[News] Coronavirus: Japan's Uniqlo to make masks using underwear fabric

Japanese casual clothing chain Uniqlo, owned by Fast Retailing, said it plans to sell face masks made of fabric used for its Airism underwear line in response to strong demand for protective gear for the coronavirus.

The company had previously been wary of making face masks, but a spokesman said it changed its mind after receiving many requests from customers to make them.

Details on pricing and launch dates would be announced at a later date, she said on Monday (May 25).

The Airism undergarments feature a specially-developed fabric known for a smooth, silky feel. The company says the fabric also keeps the wearer cool in the summer months by releasing moisture and heat.

The Peoples’ Action Party (PAP) seems to be able to creatively interpret any given situation to suit its narrative. Despite the suspension of ground engagements by the PAP on 13 April, it would appear that its Members of Parliament (MP) are still undertaking such exercises.

According to reports, West Coast Group Representative Constituency (GRC) MP, Foo Mee Har has uploaded a post of herself on Facebook (FB) on 23 May distributing face shields at the Teban Market. MP for Holland-Bukit Timah GRC, Sim Ann also posted on FB on the same day a photograph of herself with Team Bukit Timah and the Dunearn Neighbourhood Committee at the entrance of the St Theresa’s Home seemingly distributing face masks. MP for Choa Chu Kang GRC, Zaqy Mohamad had also earlier uploaded a photograph of himself on FB on 14 May distributing food in Marsiling.

These events will likely be justified as necessary in order to show leadership to constituents the same way Chia Shi Lu, MP for Tanjong Pagar GRC justified his apparent walkabout at Alexander Food Village Centre by stating that he was walking around to ensure that people were wearing face masks!

Never mind that there are many ways to emphasise the importance of face masks without needing physical visits!

Another example of apparent creative interpretation is how the government emphasises that there are two separate infections” — one rising among migrant workers, and a more stable situation among the rest of the population in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic when in reality, the separation is possibly quite arbitrary and artificial.

In the case of Aljunied-Hougang Town Council waiving its tender process when it was said to be urgent to do so, it is a deed that deserves scream out for murder in the Parliament by the ruling party. As for Surbana Jurong in its recent project, you know.

And how about when Senior Minister, Teo Chee Hean asserts that it is unconstitutional to delay general elections unless there is a state emergency when it was raised in Parliament that the general elections should be delayed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic? History shows that Singapore has amended the constitution numerous times in the past which indicates that if the government really wanted to do something, it could! Besides, if a global pandemic does not qualify as an emergency, what does?

It seems at odds to suggest that postponing a general election amid a global pandemic would be anti constitutional when the constitution has been amended multiple times over arguably less urgent matters?

The list goes on but it would appear that the government does interpret situations creatively to suit the narrative it wishes to create in order to do what it wants.

Isn’t that disingenuous?
Very true indeed. :s22:

Queen Lili'uokalani. The story of Hawaii's last Queen

Five Things To Know About Liliʻuokalani, the Last Queen of Hawaiʻi

The queen, who was deposed by a coup led by American sugar planters, died about 100 years ago, but is by no means forgotten

Liliuokalani was born in 1838 as Lydia Kamakaeha. Her family was a high-status Hawaiian clan, and her mother was an advisor to Kamehameha III, who ruled from 1825 to 1862. Before his death, he adopted his nephew, who ruled over Hawaiʻi as Kamehameha V, until 1874 when he died without naming a successor. According to the Hawaiian constitution, the legislature was empowered to elect a new king and establish a new line of succession. Lydia’s brother David Kalākaua was selected and ruled until 1891.

With his death, Liliʻuokalani was proclaimed queen, but her reign was short lived. In January 1893, a coup led by Sanford Dole took over the Hawaiian government and pressed the U.S. government to annex the islands. Two years later, after a failed insurrection by Liliʻuokalani's supporters to return power to Hawaiian royal rule, she was charged with treason and put under house arrest. In a statement, in exchange for a pardon for her and her supporters, she "yield[ed] to the superior force of the United States of America" under protest, pointing out that John L. Stevens, U.S. Minister to Hawaiʻi, who supported the provisional government, had already "caused United States troops to be landed at Honolulu.

In exile, Liliʻuokalani advocated for a free Hawaiʻi until her death in 1917 at the age of 79.

CPF, HDB, IRAS to resume operations at service counters from Jun 2, by appointment only

Selected government service centres will resume operations from Jun 2, but by appointment only, as Singapore exits the COVID-19 "circuit breaker" period.

These include the five Central Provident Fund (CPF) service centres, service counters at HDB Hub and HDB branches, as well as the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore's (IRAS) taxpayer and business service centre at Revenue House.

"For the immediate post circuit breaker period in Phase 1, selected government service centres ... will resume the physical delivery of services in a limited and controlled manner, such as by appointments only," said Public Service Division (PSD) on Monday (May 25).

"However, to safeguard public health, the Public Service will continue to keep the majority of its service centres closed in Phase One, and use digital means as the primary mode of providing services."

Other services that will resume operations from Jun 2 include the Ministry of Manpower’s employment pass services centre, the Health Promotion Board's student health centre and the National Environment Agency's one-stop information and service centre for hawkers at HDB Hub.

The Courts will also resume hearings. Where possible and appropriate, hearings will be conducted using remote communication technology, said PSD.

Meanwhile, selected dental clinics in schools will reopen from Jun 2 without the need for appointments.

"We urge all visitors to observe safe management measures during their transactions, i.e. reschedule appointments if they are unwell, wear a mask at all times, and register their visits via the SafeEntry app," said PSD.

Authorities had announced last week that Singapore will lift COVID-19 restrictions in three phases after the end of the circuit breaker period.

In Phase 1, the majority of the Public Service workforce will continue to work from home, PSD noted on Monday.

All public sector social, sports and arts facilities such as libraries, museums, beaches, parks and SportSG facilities will remain closed.

More of the government's physical service centres and facilities will reopen in Phase 2 and 3.

"However, even in Phase 3, we must remain vigilant and make ongoing efforts to minimise the risk of community spread of COVID-19," said PSD.

“Hence, the Public Service will also continue to step up its efforts to promote digital literacy and to empower citizens to use digital means to access more and more public services, including promoting digital services to senior citizens."
