[GLGT] Inherent difficulties' in AGC's case against Li Shengwu: Chief Justice

moi catch no ball :(

Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon has taken the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) to task for the arguments that it has presented against Li Shengwu, noting that there were now “inherent difficulties” in what has transpired in the case.

CJ Menon was speaking on Friday (18 January) at an Apex Court hearing of Li’s appeal against an earlier decision by the High Court that had allowed AGC to serve papers on him outside Singapore, relating to contempt of court proceedings.

He told AGC’s Senior Counsel Francis Ng, “Your arguments have abandoned the original arguments of the Attorney-General for proceeding (with this case).

“You’re now saying that the correct jurisdictional basis is Section 15, but that was not the basis on which you obtained your original leave. If you wanted to pursue a different line, it was incumbent upon you to come and ask permission.”

The Chief Justice was referring to Section 15 of the Supreme Court of Judicature Act, which defines the criminal jurisdiction of the Singapore High Court. Lawyers acting for AGC and Li had been instructed by the Court of Appeal to make legal submissions addressing a number of key questions.

Visit Himeji Castle

Most people visit Osaka Castle. This time we visited Himeji Castle and enjoyed cherry blossom early April. That was the great vacation experience we had.
Himeji Castle, also known as White Heron Castle due to its elegant, white appearance, is widely considered as Japan's most spectacular castle for its imposing size and beauty and its well preserved, complex castle grounds. Unlike many other Japanese castles, it was never destroyed by war, earthquake or fire and survives to this day as one of the country's twelve original castles. The castle recently underwent extensive renovation and fully re-opened to the public in 2015.
Himeji Castle lies at a strategic point along the western approach to the former capital city of Kyoto. The first fortifications built on the site were completed in the 1400s, and were gradually enlarged over the centuries by the various clans who ruled over the region. The castle complex as it survives today is over 400 years old and was completed in 1609. It is made up of over eighty buildings spread across multiple baileys, which are connected by a series of gates and winding paths.
If you have a Japan Rail Pass, you can start your trip from Osaka station, pass through Kyoto, Kobe and arrive Himeji two hours later. You can see the great Himeji Castle when you just step outside the station. Spending the whole day there and enjoying the delicious ramen is the great travel experience you can have.

Mobile networks are suspending orders for Huawei smartphones

Mobile networks in Asia and Europe are suspending orders for Huawei smartphones following the US decision last week to restrict the company's access to American technology.

The inclusion of Huawei on an export blacklist means the Chinese company can no longer source software or components from US suppliers without a license. Existing devices are unaffected but the restrictions threaten future Huawei products and its leading position in building super-fast next generation 5G networks.

TOKYO - Japan's Panasonic Corp said on Thursday it has stopped shipments of certain components to Huawei Technologies to comply with U.S. restrictions on the Chinese company.
"Panasonic has instructed employees to halt transactions with Huawei and its 68 affiliates covered by the U.S. ban," the company said in a statement.

Malay race already suka suka defined in 1988, hence the legitimate of useless selected Halimah

Flashback 1988: Definition of Malay Was Debated In Parliament (In The Context Of GRC System)

The issue on the definition of Malay was debated earlier in Parliament (in the context of the GRC system) back in 1988.

It was an exchange involving Goh Chok Tong, Chiam See Tong and Ahmad Mattar.

Part of the excerpt read;

Can a Maori be a “Malay” Member of Parliament? Will the day come when five Europeans enter the Singapore Parliament as “Malay” MPs?

Opposition MP Chiam See Tong posed these questions to his Select Committee colleagues as he questioned the revised definition of a Malay in the Team MP legislation.

First Deputy Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong’s reply: Anyone who feels he is part of the Malay community and is accepted by the community as such can be a “Malay” MP.

“If indeed five Europeans are accepted by members of the Malay community to be members of the community, they will be so put up by the community as candidates, because they are regarded as members of that community,” he said.

The same goes for even a Maori, said Mr Goh.

In another part;

If the day came when five or seven such Europeans entered Parliament as “Malay” MPs, he asked, where was the minority representation the GRCs were meant to ensure?

Dr Mattar told him that Malay candidates must first be cleared by the Malay Community Committee.

“If the Malay community thinks that it is best represented by the Europeans, so be it. I do not think it will happen,” he said.

Mr Sidek said that while the revised definition embraced other races, the real objectives was to avoid complaints from groups like the Banjaris or Achenese, who were not included in the original definition.

Also;

Mr Goh pointed out that the purpose of the GRCs was to ensure Malay representation in Parliament and the definition was crafted to include anyone who believes he is part of the community and is accepted as such by it.

He said that if Europeans are accepted as members of the Malay community, they are free to stand as “Malay” candidates.

“If the Malay community is happy, who are we to say they should not represent them? Because they are regarded by the Malay community as members of the Malay community.”
