[NEWS]Surbana Jurong refutes unfounded allegations of corruption over Expo COVID19 effort

Surbana Jurong will not hesitate to take legal action against anyone who makes "scurrilous attacks against our company", the company said in a press release on May 19.

The urban and infrastructure consulting firm, which is owned by Temasek, shed some light on its involvement in setting up Community Care Facilities in Singapore.

Identified and converted Expo into a Community Care Facility

As part of its community efforts, Temasek engaged some of its portfolio companies to provide support.

"Surbana Jurong was called upon to help quickly develop these facilities. In March 2020, we were asked to identify and study possible locations. We explored various sites and found Singapore Expo, with its existing mechanical and electrical (M&E) infrastructure and extensive indoor space, to be large enough and fit for purpose."

As Singapore Expo itself is a Temasek portfolio company, and was already engaged to support the initiative, Surbana Jurong was able to immediately start converting Expo into the first CCF.

It assembled a team of 50 and set up 10 halls of 8,000 beds in four weeks.

The team was led by Yeo Choon Chong, CEO, Singapore, Surbana Jurong and Vincent Lee, Director, Surbana Jurong, under the direct supervision of Group CEO, Wong Heang Fine.

Received messages of support
Surbana Jurong named the following as partners:

PSA
Woodlands Health Campus
Parkway Pantai
SingEx
Resorts World Sentosa
"Other companies"
For its efforts in providing expertise related to Covid-19 projects, Surbana Jurong said that it has received many messages of support and thanks from members of the public.

These messages have been most encouraging to Surbana Jurong's people, said the company:

"In service of the community, we will continue to provide our expertise to projects related to managing the COVID-19 crisis on a cost-recovery basis."

Surbana Jurong: Allegations are "disrespectful" of our colleagues
However, it added:

"Unfortunately, our involvement in Singapore Expo has been most unfairly subjected to unfounded accusations of profiteering and corruption in some social media posts.

These allegations are not only untrue, they are disrespectful of our colleagues who have made enormous sacrifices, including putting their health at risk, to deliver the projects under challenging conditions, for the benefit of our community."

Surbana Jurong also said it will not hesitate to use legal action against those who make "scurrilous" attacks against the company, and added that it remains focused on supporting Singapore's efforts to contain Covid-19.

Speculation on a connection
Surbana Jurong has recently been the subject of online speculation over the connection between its CEO (International) Teo Eng Cheong and Manpower Minister Josephine Teo.

Teo is indeed married to a man named Teo Eng Cheong:

New Jersey Gym Reopens in Defiance of State Order, Drawing a Huge Crowd

There were a pair of protests outside gyms in New Jersey on Monday, each demanding all small businesses be allowed to reopen immediately.

Protesters gathered outside Newell Strength, a gym in the Somerset County town of Hillsborough, to show support for the owner.

CBS2’s Natalie Duddridge reported that people were working out inside the gym, some without masks. Owner Kyle Newell assured CBS2 the business is sanitizing and operating at a limited capacity.

Newell said he had no problem being fined or even arrested in order to exercise his rights.

“This is our sole source of income. I spent 20 years building this business and I’m not just gonna let it fade away,” Newell said.

A similar protest was held earlier Monday at Atilis Gym in Bellmawr. It opened up at 8 a.m. to cheers and a huge crowd. After two months closed, the gym reopened in defiance of Gov. Phil Murphy’s stay-at-home order.

Anthony Diehl was one of many gym members who lined up to be the first to go inside.

“Anybody that’s paying their bills or taking care of their families is an essential business, so I’m just out here to support his right to operate,” Diehl said.

The gym’s co-owners, Frank Trumbetti and Ian Smith, have instituted a number of safety measures to show that they are taking health and hygiene very seriously.

However, they were issued summonses for violating Gov. Murphy’s executive order, the Bellmawr Police Department said on Monday night.

The gym will only be open to existing members and will operate at 20% capacity. Temperatures will be taken at the door and anyone at 100.4 or above will not be allowed in.

People must wear masks unless they are in the middle of lifting weights.

“I don’t have a problem with it at all. Going to the gym is good for your health. It’s good for your mind. It’s good for your body,” gym member Tony Lukosius said.

In a pair of videos posted to Facebook, the gym’s co-owners explained their decision to defy the governor’s order, saying the forced closure implemented to curb the spread of coronavirus violates their constitutional rights.

“If big box retailers, grocery and liquor stores can operate with proper health protocol in place, so can every single business in America,” Smith said.

The reopening also attracted dozens of people who are not members of the gym. Many were not wearing masks or practicing social distancing, and were waving flags supporting President Donald Trump. Wanda Tranquillo is a nurse who called on New Jersey to reopen for business.

“All jobs are essential, not just mine because I am a healthcare worker, not the police officers. Every job. Your nail salons, your hair salons, your gym owners … every job is essential. Everybody should be allowed to work,” Tranquillo said.

During a news conference last week, Gov. Murphy said he is aware of the gym, and added that “they’re out of compliance and that’s not going to be tolerated.”

Commuters to get refunds on unused value of monthly concession passes till June 1

Concession cardholders will be automatically refunded the unused value of their monthly concession passes till the end of the circuit breaker period.

TransitLink, which handles public transport transactions, said on Monday (May 18) that the extension was made in tandem with the lengthening of the circuit breaker period.

Although the circuit breaker ends on June 1, many restrictions and measures are likely to remain, the Government had said earlier.

TransitLink said two groups of commuters - those who bought their monthly concession passes before April 4, and who bought them between April 4 and 21 - will automatically receive refunds on the unused value of their passes.

For commuters who bought their passes before April 4, they will automatically receive refunds for the period of April 7 to June 1, or up to the pass expiry date, whichever comes earlier.

Students will get their refunds for the period beginning April 8 instead.

Meanwhile, commuters who bought their passes between April 4 and 21 will get a pro-rated refund for the period of April 22 to June 1, or up to the pass expiry date, whichever comes earlier.

The refunded amount will be based on the unused days left on the pass.

All refunds can be redeemed from June 2 to Aug 31 at any Add Value Machine (AVM) or TransitLink Kiosk (TL Kiosk), and will be issued as transport e-Vouchers.

"Commuters who wish to purchase a new monthly concession pass can visit any TransitLink Ticket Office or Concession Card Replacement Office to use the refunded amount to offset the cost," said TransitLink.

Concession card replacement offices are located at Admiralty, Bukit Panjang and Somerset MRT stations, and bus interchanges at Ang Mo Kio, Choa Chu Kang, Hougang, Jurong East and Tampines.

The concession card replacement office at Buona Vista MRT station is temporarily closed till further notice.

Commuters can also visit TransitLink's website or, from May 19, call the TransitLink Hotline at 1800-2255 663 to check if there is any refund for their monthly concession passes.

The hotline operates on weekdays between 8am and 6pm, except public holidays.

Why the hate?

After work, ask them out for a drink. Those AMDK expats in SG are generally quite chill ppl. To be honest, I think they are far less snobbish compared to sinkies even though they hold high position.

From this week, most Pri and Sec schools will each have 50-200 graduating students return to classes

From this week, most primary and secondary schools will each see about 50 to 200 graduating students returning to their classrooms.

Classes will be staggered and they will return to school on different days and times, said the Ministry of Education in response to queries.

They will be back in small groups for face-to-face lessons as circuit breaker measures slowly ease up. Attendance is not compulsory.

Education Minister Ong Ye Kung had earlier said that graduating students are anxious to prepare for the national examinations after about a month of full home-based learning last month. He acknowledged that home-based learning cannot fully replace physical lessons.

Students are currently having their school holidays, which were brought forward from next month. As for when other students can return to school, the multi-ministry Covid-19 task force said it will review the matter at a later date.

Swiss Cottage Secondary School student Eugene Kan, who is in Secondary 4, will be returning to school from this week to catch up on science subjects.

"It's not the teachers' fault, but there's only so much information you can convey through the screen. And it's easier to raise your hand to ask for help in a physical classroom," said the 15-year-old.

Chung Cheng High School (Main) Secondary 4 student Lee Jia Xin, 16, will not be returning to school yet, but has signed up for at least one online consultation with her teacher this week.

"Teachers gave us revision materials and holiday assignments," she said.

"For subjects like biology, I felt like I didn't learn as much as I would have if I were physically in class."

It will be necessary to have more catch-up sessions in school later on, she added.
